Introduction

Cardslinger is a game jam project that combines the gameplay between Poker and arcade brawlers. Match pairs of cards to execute battle combos and defeat various enemies & bosses in epic battles!

Developed with Unity and assets are created using Aseprite.

Concept Development

We would like to challenge ourselves to create a game that only uses the CGA color palette. CGA (Color Graphics Adapter) was first introduced in 1981 as IBM's first graphics card & color display. It also became IBM's first computer display standard. In order to resonate with the time of CGA was popular, Western/Sci-fi games are big at the time so we wanted to incorporate the themes in this game.

The game is heavily inspired by traditional poker and beat'em-up classic arcade games. We came up with an interesting game mechanic where you have to consider the balance between action and strategy. First, you have to match pairs of cards. After matching pairs, you can execute a combo to attack the enemies. Some enemies have special colors and if you match a combo that matches with the color of the enemy, you can deal double damage to the enemies!

Conclusion

The game got attention from The Museum of Art and Digital Entertainment (MADE) in San Francisco. They would like to feature our game in their booth at GDC 2018. It was great that the game got a great coverage during the event. Unfortunately, since I was working as a research assistant at the time, I couldn't continue contributing my work for the project.
